McEachin served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1996 to 2001.
In 2001, McEachin had won a four-way Democratic primary for Attorney General of Virginia, with 33.6% of the vote.[2] In the general election in November, he lost to Republican Jerry W. Kilgore by 20 percentage points.[3]
From 2006 to 2007, McEachin again served in the Virginia House of Delegates.
In a June 2007 primary, McEachin won the Democratic nomination for the Senate seat he now holds by defeating incumbent Senator Benjamin Lambert, after Lambert endorsed Republican United States Senator George Allen in Allen's unsuccessful 2006 re-election campaign against Jim Webb.[4][5]
McEachin is commonly cited as a close ally of Richmond Mayor and former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder.
McEachin, his wife Colette and three daughters live in Henrico County. McEachin is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, the NAACP, the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.
